Super Junior appointed Korea ambassadors

MANILA, Philippines - Korea is banking on the popularity of boy band Super Junior to promote the country and the Korean Wave and attract more visitors.

The Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) has appointed the boy band to be its tourism ambassadors.

Super Junior’s Leeteuk, Eunhyuk, Shindong and Sungmin and SM Entertainment CEO Kim Young-Min attended the presentation ceremony on July 26 together with Lee Cham, president of the KTO.

During the ceremony, Super Junior was presented with a plaque to formalize their role as tourism ambassadors.

SM Entertainment and the KTO also signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on the entertainment and tourism industries’ development and promotion overseas.

The two entities will be providing information and create synergy between tourism and hallyu, or the Korean Wave.

The selection of Super Junior as tourism ambassadors was based on a survey by the KTO on 12,085 non-Korean respondents on social networking sites in May this year.

The respondents were asked to pick hallyu stars they wanted to be their travel buddies in Korea and Super Junior came on top of the survey, garnering 13 percent. Big Bang was second and JYJ was third.

By language spoken by the respondents, English speakers chose Super Junior.

Super Junior is one of the most popular idol groups not only in Korea but in other Asian countries.

Recently, Super Junior’s “Bonamana”, the title track of their fourth album, made history by ranking No. 1 for 60 consecutive weeks on the Korean music Top 100 weekly chart on KKBOX, the biggest online music website in Taiwan.

The appointment of Super Junior as Korea’s tourism ambassadors comes as the boy band prepares for their comeback to the music scene.

On August 3, Super Junior will release their fifth album and fans are agog over the teaser photos of the members that have been released in the last few days.

The boy band will come back as a group after more than a year of doing individual activities.

Let’s Talk About Sex

In our latest Fabcast, Migs asked me what I thought about something that Danton Remoto reportedly said, that going to the bathhouse is “an unhealthy expression of sexuality.” Listening to how I fumbled for an answer, one can figure out that I was caught unaware by Migs’ question.

What flummoxed me was that a statement like that would be attributed to Danton Remoto—he who has been in the forefront of a very public battle for gay equality and rights. It almost sounds like he was quoted out of context. Or if not, then it sounds like one of those deliberate sound bites he tossed to the media in an attempt to get the more conservative sectors of our society to consider him as a serious Senatorial candidate.* *(A reader named John messaged me on Facebook, claiming that Danton was misquoted. Full message will be posted here in The McVie Show.)

Whatever.

Obviously I disagree with that statement. And my disagreement clearly shows the difference between my views on sex versus how sex is viewed by the general Filipino populace, raised by the standards of the Roman Catholic Church. There already lies the disparity. They say “procreation,” I say “recreation.” They say “copulate,” I say “fuck.”

But in the end, a tomato is still a tomato and a potato is still a potato. (Let’s call the whole thing off.)

Look around, everywhere you turn is sexual, it’s everywhere that you go. Sex is so natural. Animals do it without getting bothered whether they are “copulating” or “fucking.” And while monogamy does exist with certain species, most animals do it because Nature has hardwired into all living creatures a very basic instinct: survival of the species.

Conservatives will argue that sex among humans should go beyond basic instincts because, well, we are more evolved than animals. Thus we have sex not just so we can ensure our genes will be passed on; we also have sex because: [1] it is the highest expression of love between [2] two people of [3] opposite genders who [4] have come together in sacred matrimony.

Whew! That’s four qualifications. Four rigid “musts” that should be present; otherwise, any kind of sex not covered by that (or one or more of the “musts” is missing) is considered unhealthy and a sin.

See what my problem is with the Church’s stand on sex? It is so limiting and narrow.

[1] Why can’t sex be just a friendly fuck? Or why can’t people have sex purely out of lust? Why can’t sex be viewed as recreational, a physical activity unlike playing tennis, where two people come together, sweat it out, then shake hands at the end? [2] Why can’t three or more people have sex with one another all at the same time? [3] Why should it just be between a man and a woman? [4] Why is sex limited to within matrimony?

And why is it that someone who questions these things is suddenly labeled as unhealthy? A slut? Immoral? A published author on bathhouses? (Ay.)

It’s about institutions (the Church and, sadly, the Philippine government which kowtows to the religious powers) that insist on putting a specific and quite deep meaning to an act that, at its core, is as natural to us as breathing. “Oh, but we shouldn’t reduce sex to something primal!” they counter. My dear monsignors and fathers, I have no intention of seeing sex as merely primal—there is nothing “primal” about preparing for sex, cleaning up oneself, buying condoms and lube, making sure there’s a safe place to do it, etc. Sex is a deliberate act. It is also an act that can be quite meaningful (physical expression of love between two people), somewhat meaningful (a playful romp between fuck buddies) and completely meaningless (anonymous, furtive sex in public bathrooms). And besides, monsignors and fathers, you’re the ones who give in to primal urges when you break your vows of chastity and become cover stories of Time and Newsweek. (And yes, dear monsignors and fathers, you were being quite deliberate when you were breaking your vows.)

But let’s go back to the original question: is going to the bathhouse an unhealthy expression of sexuality? For me, the bathhouse is not the issue here, for it is only a venue for sex to happen. The core of the issue here is the going into such places to have random sex. And I believe ultimately it is the “random sex” that throws the conservatives—gay or otherwise—off. (I can almost hear their unspoken grumblings: “Why are certain gays so lucky? They can get away with having venues and opportunities where they can have sex with almost anyone?”)

Yes, random sex can be unhealthy and unsafe and an irresponsible act. That is, if the persons doing it have an unhealthy view of sex, an unhealthy view of their bodies, and ultimately an unhealthy view of their self-worth. (It doesn’t help that narrow-minded views on sexuality produce people who are raised with guilt about their bodies.)

But if two healthy, consenting adults were to meet up and agree to have safe and responsible sex, then I don’t see any problem. The bathhouse just provides a relatively safe, clean and private alternative, as opposed to public toilets in the malls or in MRT stations.

Of course the Church, while being monolithic, has members who aren’t as medieval in their way of thinking. But as a monolith, it needs to make one stand on the issue of sex. Okay fine, well and good. But just don’t expect that everyone will agree to that stand. And there should be a live-and-let-live attitude towards those who disagree, even those who aren’t believers of the same faith.

The Apple iPad is not a computer replacement, but a great companion

One thought I had after I first pulled the iPad out of the box and started playing with it was that I would buy one for my mother-in-law for her to use as her main computer. She has been bugging me to get her a computer for a couple of years, but she has a tendency to blow all her money on junk treasure on eBay and my wife really doesn’t want me making that easier for her. She asked me a couple months ago if she went to the store and bought a laptop would that be all she needs to connect to the Internet and use ebay and Yahoo! email? She thought that Internet connections were floating out there so all you needed was a laptop to connect to it. When I told her the service runs $40 to $50 a month then she was no longer interested. I was thinking an iPad with $10/month AT&T service would be perfect for her. After several days with the Apple iPad, I think it could serve as her only computer with some minimal training and setup being done by me. I don’t think it can serve as an only computer for most folks though. Then again, Apple hasn’t marketed it that way and I am personally having a blast with it as a companion device.

Why can it be her only computer?

My mother-in-law comes over and uses our computers to email people, look at her photos, surf and buy things from ebay and that’s about all she does with a computer. I showed her the Photos application at Easter and she LOVED it and said she may buy one just for that capability alone. I told her I had to use my computer to get photos on the iPad and she wasn’t happy. There is an adapter that can be purchased to load photos, but Apple should have put in a SD card slot or at least included a SD card slot in the dock to make this easier for people. The iPad does have limited storage so using it as your only computer may present issues for storing all your photos so I would have to show her how to use cloud storage solutions and note that SugarSync looks to be the first with an iPad client.

The eBay app looks great and that would easily meet her ebay needs while Safari or even the email client would work fine with her Yahoo! email account. I imagine she would also enjoy many other applications on the iPad and know she would get hooked on some of the casual games, like Plants vs. Zombies.

She wasn’t that comfortable with the touch interface and on-screen keyboard so it would take her a bit to get used to these technologies. She would also need some kind of physical keyboard since I highly doubt she would fully adopt the touchscreen only keyboard. She is almost 70 and the 1.5 pound weight is also pretty significant for her to hold up for extended periods of time. A dock would be needed as well. After adding all these accessories and getting one with higher memory capacity for photos she would be approaching $1,000 for an iPad with 3G. I think she would be fine with the $10/month lower data plan, unless she starts emailing out a ton of photos and then would jump to the more expensive $30/month plan. This is still less than cable or DSL in our area though so that may be fine.

I plan to let her use it more and will figure out if this will be a good Mother’s Day or Christmas gift for her. I will also be keeping my eye on other tablet solutions, but they need to be drop dead easy with no virus software needs or other maintenance requirements. Maybe a Linux-based netbook would work better for her at half the cost.

Why can’t it be your only computer?

I think there are many people who have basic computer needs like my mother-in-law, but for anyone else the current iPad will not be a good replacement for a computer. The iPhone OS does not currently support multitasking, this may change with OS 4.0, and I already see this as a bit of an issue as I try to do more than use the apps I have installed or surf the web. One example is that I would like to use Facebook chat in Safari and then jump out to do other things like email or play a game and then jump back into a conversation.

Office document support is actually pretty weak with the iWork suite of apps as Joel mentioned and it is interesting that these three apps are at the top of the charts. I think people did what I did and watched the commercials then purchased the apps without even seeing what limitations there are. I wonder how many people have actually used the applications after purchasing them since it isn’t easy to get documents into or out of them and share with others who do not have iWork on a Mac. There is an opportunity here for Quickoffice and Documents To Go to easily grab the top spot in Office apps since their products work with native Office documents and allow access through multiple cloud and email solutions on the iPhone and I can’t wait to see their iPad clients.

The Safari browser is good, but it isn’t the “full” internet and people have needs to access secure sites (such as bank sites) and other sites that require more than what Safari offers. Not to mention that Flash is not supported either.

You can buy apps, music, and movies directly on the iPad, but having a Mac or PC makes it much easier to manage these things while also allowing your to edit movies and photos to get them onto your iPad. There is limited space on the iPad so you are limited by how many apps, music, and movies you can load up on it so storage capacity is a limitation. Cloud solutions may work for storage, but editing and media creation is not available on the iPad.

I think there is potential to move the iPad further into the category as a netbook replacement with firmware updates and accessories and tomorrow’s OS 4.0 announcement may reveal some of that to us.

One thing that disappointed me when I first turned on my iPad was that you needed to connect to iTunes to do ANYTHING at all with it. I suppose someone like my mother-in-law could get it started up with help at the Apple Store and one of their computers, but it is designed to sync to a PC or Mac. Also, there are no over-the-air (OTA) updates for the iPad so she would not be able to update it without connecting to a PC or Mac. Hmm, I guess the iPad never will be able to be used as a stand alone device or computer replacement.

Will it succeed as a companion device?

I went into my iPad purchase knowing it was not going to replace my MacBook Pro, but I did think it would be possible to replace my MSI Wind netbook. I don’t think it will even do that at this time so a cheap desktop with an iPad may be the best solution for most people. I do think it is a very good companion device with the awesome photo experience, apps like MLB At Bat, Netflix, and The Elements, fun gaming device (you have to try Plants vs. Zombies), good ebook reader with Kindle, Kobo, and Olive Tree Bible Reader, enjoyable newspaper and magazine reader, and social media device. I really do not understand why there is no Facebook application yet though and think that should have been on there at launch.

Apple reported that they sold about 300,000 iPads on the first day. That is actually a good number for an expensive luxury item in today’s economy. I think it will see growing adoption as people evaluate what they do with their computer and the Internet and get a chance to see more commercials and people with the device in hand. I do not think it will be as widely adopted as the iPhone since the price is quite high and people still need to justify a need for it.

Adam Lambert, judging on the erm.....grand total of five (hahahahahahaha) performances by him that I've watched is quite a versatile performer/singer. (: He can sing all types of genres and truthfully, his performances are somewhat more entertaining than Kris' (sorry sexy).

Adam's got a voice that you barely get to listen to anymore in the 21st century. And it's really awesome that a guy like that can pull off so many different songs!

Though to be honest sometimes his voice gives me goosebumps and not necessarily in a good way. But juxtapose him next to Kris, hands down Adam's the better performer. But in terms of being able to win people's hearts you gotta give it to hottie Kris because well, that's how he got the 100++ million (siao one the voters) votes right! :D

And Adam's got this very awkward air about him with which I sometimes cannot tolerate. It's like, he's always pretending to be someone he's not or something like that and no I am not saying this because I read those gay rumours before I even paid attention to Adam.

But it's all good because hottie Kris (sorry I shall stop changing his name) has got a LOVELY voice which I absolutely LOVE listening to! It's so soothing, so gentle, so soothing, so gentle, so soothing, so gentle, repeat this fifty thousand times and you will get what I mean. (: And in my opinion though I think Adam is the better performer and can hit higher notes than Hott- I mean Kris (:P) can, the winning song which they both sang, Kris seriously did it better than Adam. Serious. The way Adam sang the song, No Boundaries (if I'm not mistaken) is like, it doesn't suit him at all! But it fits PERFECTLY with Kris' sultry sexy soothing soft (4S!) hot gentle lovely perfect voice. (: (: (: (: (:

When we first saw Daniel Henney, it was in a black and white cosmetic commercial. The moment this beautiful man, whom we had never seen before and was racially hard to define, walked out of a lake, every woman let out a cry in awe. From his very first appearance, he was a fantasy in reincarnation and he revived it well. In MBC’s hit drama “My Name is Kim Sam-soon”, he played the second male lead, a part that is often just a tool for jealousy or conspiracy. But Henney played the character Henry with such plain genuineness that Henry was, for a long time, the Daniel he is.

However, Mr. Fantasy did not hide his ambitions as an actor. He easily won us over by putting variations on the nice guy image that everyone adored, but he took everyone by surprise by playing the heartless Robin in “Seducing Mr. Robin” and swept the awards for Best New Actor with “My Father”. Throughout the movie, he wept, screamed, resented and then he laughed and forgave. With “My Father”, he displayed a variety of emotions on a frequency from 1 to 10, entering the path to turn from a living statue into a passionate human and actor.

Everyone watched to see what he would do after “My Father”, where his language handicap worked to his advantage. Leaving behind concerns that he would not be able to keep working with his less-than-fluent Korean, he flew to Hollywood. And in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”, he came back as the mean Agent Zero, a character with an inferiority complex to Wolverine. Henney, who said that “As an actor, I can’t just give the public what they want to see”, has a clear picture as an actor and to achieve that, he does not hesitate, not even for a second. At the same time, to his fans who might be surprised to see his tough side, he assures them by telling them “Don’t be surprised” and that he is “still gentle”. Yes, Henney is still “Daniel Henney”. Here, Daniel Henney, the perfect guy for the romantic lead, gives romantic movie recommendations that are just as sweet as the actor himself.

1. “Big” (1988, directed by Penney Marshall)
“This is my favorite movie. I have a fantasy about a child suddenly becoming an adult and I have always loved fantasy movies. I also watched the movie“Annie” over and over as a child. It aired on TV every morning at 7 a.m. and I never missed a day of it. I was living in the countryside at the time, so a big city like New York was really interesting to me. In “Big”, Josh is shocked when he goes into the city where adults live. I was able to relate to the same confusion. The movie reminds me of my childhood every time I watch it.”

Thirteen-year-old boy Josh, played by Tom Hanks, makes a wish at an amusement park and becomes a thirty-year-old man overnight. Josh, a boy in a man’s body, is amused by everything in the grown-up world. He accidentally gets a job at a toy company, succeeds in everything he does and earns the chairman’s trust. Women are attracted to the honest and genuine Josh and the movie informs, in a comedic and articulate way, what women want in a relationship.

2. “Kate & Leopold” (2001, directed by James Mangold)
“I watch this film to get the feeling that I’m on vacation. I think movies are like two-hour vacations we can enjoy in our everyday life. They don’t always have to be serious and complex. The crazy love story of Kate & Leopold, which spans over much time and space, leaves a great feeling in me… like I just took a good long rest. Stories about less-than-perfect people are more relatable than stories about successful, perfect people. And the tough guy Hugh Jackman is so different in this film. (laughs)”

Unpolished beauty Hugh Jackman meets the queen of romantic comedy Meg Ryan in this movie. The cynical single woman Kate, played by Meg Ryan, enjoys voyeuring old lovers’ houses. She runs into Leopold, played by Hugh Jackman, who is very odd. He is a helpless romantic with corny manners and too many compliments.

3. “The Princess Bride” (1987, directed by Rob Reiner)
“This is a movie about a prince and a princess but it’s a little different. It makes parodies of all the conventional fairy tales and movies. In a swordfight, they keep fighting with one cut-off arm and a hotdog in the other hand. (laugh) It’s a really cute, funny, romantic movie. It has a perfectly predictable “happily ever after” ending but the process is new and fresh. It’s really fun… I recommend everyone to watch it.”

There are no princess and prince fairy tales that you know of in this movie. The twisted old stories are fresh to watch, even now. The princess, played by Robin Wright, is set to marry a prince from a neighboring country but actually loves the servant boy, played by Cary Elwes. Caught up in a war conspiracy, the princess is kidnapped and the prince tries to kill the boy.

4. “Notting Hill” (1999, directed by Roger Michell)
“This film is very personal to me. When I first went to Hong Kong three years ago, this movie was all I had. I had no friends, no one to talk to in a tiny apartment. And I had a VCD, not even a DVD, of “Notting Hill”. I watched it every night by myself, crying and laughing. And eating a peanut butter sandwich wet with tears. Can I fall in love with an ordinary girl working in a bookstore? Of course! (laughs)”

William, played by Hugh Grant, is a bookstore owner living a quiet life who accidentally keeps running into Hollywood movie star Anna, acted by Julia Roberts. He and his close friends see the real, hidden side of Anna and the two, after going through their ups and downs, end up realizing they are in love. The movie has all the elements of a classic romantic comedy -- from the dramatic proposal at the press conference to the happy ending. The theme song “She” lingers around long after the movie has ended.

5. “My Sassy Girl” (2001, directed by Kwak Jae-yong)
"I did an advertisement with Jun Ji-hyun. She was really sexy when we shot it but you can’t see any of that in this film. She drinks, vomits and slaps a guy on the subway. (laughs) She was completely crazy but natural in her appeal. I prefer cute women to those who always look perfect. And I think that’s why people like this film. In most movies, the female lead is beautiful and smart, but here Jun looks like someone who could be in an office or school. I think that was the secret to the success of this movie.”

The first and the most successful of the romantic comedy series by the Kwak-Jun collaboration. Still reeling from her painful first love, the seemingly innocent character Jun is actually violent and stubborn. And Gyun-woo, played by Cha Tae-hyun, loves her but is physically exhausted by her. Full of incidents of slapping, vomiting and getting drunk, the love story of Gyun-woo and the sassy girl is lively and animated, just like the internet novel that it was based upon.

Hahaha. No promises, but I'll try?

I have a few reasons why I'm going back though.

Firstly, I missed my dad's birthday last month as I had to work in Singapore preparing for the Blog Awards. I actually got him a present earlier but I had no time to go back before that as well and thus only bringing him his belated birthday present this week. I hope he likes what I bought for him. :)

Next, I do miss my parents (a bit). It's been almost 3 months since I last see them, I think. So yea, it's time to drop by Ipoh to see them. However, I'm very sure the moment I see them, this reason will be nullified and I will wonder what can I do in Ipoh for the rest of 2 days. Lol.

Lastly, there's a distant relative wedding dinner to attend this weekend! Hurray!! I'm damn cheapskate and love wedding dinners. Especially the first 2 courses!! The appetizer usually rocks and sharkfin is no doubt the bomb!!! Muahahaha, attending wedding dinners of relatives are cost efficient, cause your parents pay for angpow instead of you!!! Yea! Yea! Yea!

Okay from these 3 reasons I bet you've deciphered me as someone who prioritized work from family, a not filial son and cheapskate, thick faced guy. I do admit I'm all three but I don't exactly see much wrong in it due to what I've faced in my life. So I beg for you not to judge anyone for what they do in the present as many of us may be touched or shattered to hear what they had gone through.

Two weeks ago, my Ex wrote me:

"I'm not responsible for your reputation. It speaks for itself. You have turned into a bitter bitchy queen. You used to be fun and charming. You have let this competitive edge rule your life and it has damaged your relationships."

I would be lying if I said it didn't profoundly affect me. There have been similar whispers about my attitude from other quarters. Chirps here and there. My stubborn male pride bristles at any suggestion that I'm a douche.

An inner voice seethes and hisses, "master... they are jealous (and squishy!)... don't heed their warnings!" Then there is my heart still heavily guarded and under house arrest. It's the only sane part of me. It pleads, "It's not too late to turn away from the Dark Side! There is still time to heal the hole in your soul!"

The Louisville Trip would provide a perfect test of... Can I get along well with others in a non-competitive environment? On the surface, it was a risky trip filled with potential for great disappointment. Most of the people I was meeting were strictly Facebook friends whom I had never met.

THE TRIP:
I checked into my hotel at the Museum 21 C. It is a posh downtown hotel worthy of a Queen. My room was large with a great view, king sized bed, and a nice bathroom. The turn down service every day was appreciated, because I never had to worry about running out of fresh towels. Everybody knows or should know that I take frequent showers.

On the first day, I met up with owned bud Chad. He has a wonderful sense of humor in both the Facebook world and real world. We ate at a Qdoba Mexican Grill in Bardstown and had good conversation. From there, Chad took me around to see the gorgeous Cherokee Park and Cave Hill Cemetary.

I was passed off to the friendly couple of Chris and Chris (not pictured) where they introduced me to the wonderful chrisandwich. It was quite delicious! We eventually reconnected with Chad and his Daddy Bill, where we ate at the Irish Rover and had drinks at the Q (home bar of the delightful Casey Leek and singing cartwheel legend J.Buttons).

On Friday, Casey and I dueled on the tennis courts. I was whipping his ass in each set, before he would stage amazing comebacks. We ended up splitting our sets 7-6,6-7 and called it a "tie" so neither one of us would pout on the drive back. See... I can sometimes put the greater good ahead of my own blood lust for winning!

It was on Saturday that I would meet SUPER NERD Brian again after a fateful Southern Decadence meeting with his partner Donald a few years ago. Brian has a penchant for embarrassing you with really witty illustrations on your Facebook page:

On Saturday night, I went to a fabulous party with Bill, Chad, and Brian where I met some very friendly Kentucky boys and a WOOFY West Virginian named Alex:

After socializing, drinking, and making mischief, we ended the night at Tryangles and The Connection where I lost track of how many people I slobbered over. Bill and Chad must think I am super slutty when drinking. LOL.

By Sunday, I was totally exhausted and flew back home to Louisiana. Thank you, Louisville for renewing my spirit and teaching me that happiness can exist outside of a tennis court. I look forward to seeing you guys soon... at IML in Chicago. :)
